A Weekend of Outdoor Action in Cardiff Bay

Families are returning to Roald Dahl Plass in Cardiff Bay again over the weekend of June 21-22 (11am – 5pm) for the Cardiff Outdoor Action Show, a FREE two day event that showcases to people of all ages and abilities the exciting activities and attractions both on and off the water for visitors to Cardiff Bay.

Last summer over 20,000 people turned up to experience a variety of water sports in a safe and fun-filled environment. Entry is FREE, with a small charge of £1 per person for the Come & Try It water activities. Starting at just aged three, children can try out canoeing and paddle sports in a specially built canoe pool in the heart of Roald Dahl Plass, with qualified instructors on hand to make sure they enjoy it, but also are able to do it properly.

Adults and children aged eight upwards can also try canoeing and sailing in the beautiful 200 hectare lake in the Bay. There are also a number of exhibitions and competitions taking place across both days. Demonstrations each day will also include kayaking, sailing, rowing, flat water racing, canoe polo and a freestyle competition.

Cllr. Nigel Howells, Executive Member for Sport, Leisure and Culture said: “Cardiff has a strong reputation for excellence in both watersports and outdoor activities. The Outdoor Action Show is a wonderful way for people of all ages to discover what is on offer and make the most of the opportunities with Adventure Cardiff in Cardiff Bay.”

Councillor Nigel Howells, Executive Member for Sports, Leisure and Culture.

I am delighted to introduce this guide and welcome you to join in and discover ‘Adventure Cardiff’. The capital city of Wales offers a wide range of activities and experiences for both indoor and outdoor pursuits for adults, children; beginners and experienced sportspeople. Many of the activities are set around the beautiful 200 hectare fresh water lake which is Cardiff Bay, with others taking place in the more tranquil setting of Llanishen Reservoir in the north of the City.

Since the opening of Cardiff Bay Water Activity Centre (CBWAC) in 2005, I have been personally involved in the centre and was also very pleased to attend the launch of the new International Sports Village, which is now home to an international standard 50 metre swimming pool and ice rink; and is developing its plans to expand the range of other sporting, leisure and retail facilities on this site.

Adventure Cardiff has established a strong reputation for watersports and multi activity uses at the sites in Llanishen and Cardiff Bay. Both centres are staffed by a team of qualified, experienced instructors; with both offering a multi faceted programme of activities for those from aged 8 upwards. Enthusiasts ranging from amateur to professional can join courses for groups or one-to-one tuition, in a safe and fun-filled environment.

Certified by the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority (AALA), Royal Yachting Association (RYA), Welsh Amateur Rowing Association (WARA) and recognised by the Welsh Canoe Association (WCA)and a key partner for the Welsh Yachting Association (WYA), the Centres are run by Cardiff Harbour Authority which also facilitates world class events such as powerboating, sailing, canoeing, and rowing championships.

Visitors, students and local residents can enjoy the thrill of water based adventure activities and other adrenalin sports including windsurfing, climbing and mountain biking. Cardiff is establishing itself as a capital water sports destination and it is a pleasure to introduce this new web site to Adventure Cardiff which is packed with lots of information on how to participate.

If you have never had the chance to discover adventure activities, I hope this new web site will give you the opportunity to get active in Cardiff.
