Councillor Nigel Howells, Executive Member
for Sports, Leisure and Culture.
It gives
me great pleasure to introduce the second annual guide to
Adventure Cardiff and invite you to discover the variety of
activities on offer.
As the
Capital of Wales, Cardiff reaps the benefits of a modern city
with international sporting facilities such as the Millennium
Stadium, together with the Celtic countryside right on its
doorstep.
This year
the city centre - already ranked in the top 10 UK retail
destinations - enters its final phase of developing the new St
David’s 2 shopping complex. Also, Cardiff Castle has undergone
extensive refurbishment including, opening its new
Interpretation Centre in the heart of the city.
Cardiff
Bay - less than two miles from the centre - has become a widely
respected sporting destination in its own right. Watersports
enthusiasts of all ages and abilities can participate in a
multitude of activities in a safe and exciting environment.
Since the Barrage was built in 2001, creating the 200 hectare
freshwater lake, Cardiff Bay has hosted a number of land and
water-based events such as the popular Cardiff International
Food and Drink Festival and Cardiff Outdoor Action Show. Last
year’s Home Countries Rowing Championship was an important
tournament in the careers of budding Olympians and in 2009 we
will again showcase a calendar of exciting spectator and
participant events.
The
International Sports Village continues to evolve with new
facilities including the olympic-standard Canoe Slalom Centre
undergoing construction, due to be completed by 2010. The new
international standard 50 metre swimming pool and ice rink have
already been a great hit with visitors and residents, heralding
a new era of sporting excellence against the beautiful Bay
backdrop.
Adventure
Cardiff has developed a strong reputation for running
high-profile events alongside its main role as activity
provider. Whether you are a water sports veteran or looking to
try something new, Adventure Cardiff has two sites offering a
range of water based options.
Certified
by the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority (AALA), Royal
Yachting Association (RYA), Welsh Amateur Rowing Association (WARA)
and recognised by the Welsh Canoe Association (WCA) and a key
partner for the Welsh Yachting Association (WYA), the Centres in
the Bay and at Llanishen are run by experienced and qualified
instructors working for Cardiff Harbour Authority.
Rowing,
sailing, canoeing, kayaking, climbing, powerboating, white water
rafting, mountain biking - or if you can’t decide - a mix of
everything!
We hope
you enjoy reading about these opportunities and this guide
serves as a useful stepping stone to experiencing the thrill of
Adventure Cardiff.
